MISC:An archipelago in the Atlantic; the Madeira Islands consist of 2
inhabited islands-Maderia and Porto Santo, plus 2 groups of uninhabited
islands and rocks called the Desertas and the Selvagens. The Desertas
consist of Illheu Chao, Bugio, Deserta Grand, and Sail Rock. Possessing
a mild climate, Maderia has a reputation of a health and winter resort.
About 100 different plants are found only in Maderia. The archipelago
occupies a strategic location along the western sea approaches to the
Strait of Gibraltar.
